![]() At that time, Robert built a house in Tamarindo and has been a regular surfer in Costa Rica for twenty years. Robert helped put Costa Rica on the global surf map back in the early 90’s when he and Bruce Brown filmed Witch’s Rock, Ollie’s Point, and Tamarindo for their sequel movie, The Endless Summer II. When the film debuted in 1964 it launched the modern surf and travel era and lured millions of people to ride waves around the world. So why choose a session with SEA? Surfing with us can be a holistic teaching and learning experience which is likely to spark a lifetime of joy spent among friends and family in the outdoors.Witch’s Rock Surf Camp is stoked to be working with Robert August, star of the most influential surf movie of all time: The Endless Summer. In addition to surf instruction, students will gain valuable information on ocean safety and independence, marine science specific to our local coastal areas, and environmental conservation and stewardship. We see the ocean as our dojo and empower our students to make sound decisions both in and out of the water. Surfers need to be patient, resilient, creative and kind. The life lessons gained from surfing run a range of character traits which support healthy development and 21st century skills. Surfing is a unique opportunity for students to foster an independent relationship with nature through hands-on experience. Students start at a “Green Jersey” (like a “white belt” in karate) with the opportunity to advance to blue, green, orange, red, and eventually black, as they progress in skill, confidence and self awareness. Modeled after best practices in martial arts, SEA has a sophisticated curriculum, and learning pathway which equips students with the skills and knowledge to be safe and independent in the ocean. We maintain a ratio of never more than one instructor to five students at all times, both in and out of the water, and for younger students our ratio is one instructor to four students. SEA instructors are all certified in Water Safety, CPR and Advanced First Aid, as well as trained in International Surfing Association best practices, leading the industry in ocean safety and surf instruction.
